Can anyone recommend antivirus for home computer?

We do have a virus on the computer now - the message window states that a "spyware virus has been detected". This virus has changed the desktop background, but that's all I've noticed. Our computer is used mostly for internet surfing, some e-mailing and IM-ing. We do not do on-line banking.

Thank you!

AVG free is good, its free and good for about a year. I really like microsoft onelive if you have a newer machine. Its free for 90 days, and has antispyware, a backup utility, antivirus, and some things that help clean up your computer and make it faster

AVG is a very good program for this. You can get a free version by going to www.download.com and typing in free avg
Looking at all the responses to this time I would say that they are all correct and proper. I would take issue with some of the solutions. Since you have yahoo utilize the toolbar to have the Norton Spyware Scanner on it. It is slow but thorough in its scan when you utilize the full scan feature. AVG is a great program and asset, however, it can recognize Trojan infiltrations it can not cure. I utilize AVG and run it automatically at 3am each day. In addition I run AntiVir, a free download from CNET, each noon. This AntiVir recognized and removed/repaired Trojans that the AVG could not!
Ok, no need to panic!
