When AVAST found the files, it immediately gave you a screen with the option to DELETE the infected file.

You should have done it then.

If you got confused and closed that screen, then just run the program again, and when the alert goes off

select the option DELETE

Yeah you can, but really i think you've wasted your money on getting Norton Antivirus, it DOES NOT stop viruses it's actually one of the lowest anti virus softwares available today.

Should be able to, but just beware of two things, sometime problems do happen, and if she or you ever needed to reinstall the program, and only one of you had the CD, that can cause problems, as you can figure.

Not to mention the fact that Norton can be a big lag, on computer systems. It doesn't happen to everyone but if you notice your computer running a little slow, it is likely do to Norton. I no longer use Norton I've been using AVG for about five months now and found it to work fine, it doesn't lag the computer and my computer is free of infection, I've checked it out on free online scans, just to test it out.

there are two ways to get a virus:

You download a file, and it turns out to be a virus, if the file runs correcly it isnt a virus, and a virus cannot be attached to it.

The other is that Internet explorer downloads the virus by mistaking it for a cookie and opening it.

The only ways you can keep from getting viruses are:

Yes Norton is really a pain. Have you tried going to the control panel and then clicking on Add / Remove programs and removing anything with Norton in the name. That may help.
I've had similar problems with files that won't delete. Try renaming the files and then deleting.
Yes, norton has been unusable since the switch to osx. try repairing permissions with disk utility and try again. if that doesn't work, then cmnd f the files and change the ''owner'' to you, assuming you are administrator. Unless you run windows, then i recommend suicide.

The previous answer was a good one. AVG is as good a free antivirus as you can get. The current free AVG will only be good until January, when Grisoft will replace it with another free version. But you need some other things, too. SpyBot and Ad-Aware keep your computer free of spyware and unwanted ads. It takes all of them to keep a computer running clean.

Your anti-virus software is set to scan automatically at a certain time. Check the settings. There should be something there that allows you to start a scan either daily, weekly or on a certain day at a certain time. If you find this setting in your program, you can turn it off. REMEMBER: if you do not turn off the auto-run setting and your computer is off when the scan is suppose to run, the scan will run EVERY TIME YOU TURN ON YOUR COMPUTER and you will have to stop it manually every time . So find that option that turns it off.
Because it's scheduled to. This can usually be changed to a more convenient time. If it does not run when it's scheduled it will try again after a certain amount of time. How to change and update the times is different for every software package. It will continue to try to run until it completes the task. Then the schedule will start all over again.

DO NOT use 2 anti-Virus programs on a computer. They will conflict with one another.

But you can (and should) use several (anti-)spyware programs (Spybot and Ad-aware are great).
but of course, its the same as having two word processors in the same machine. The problem begins when those 2 programs begin to ''atack'' each other, very much like the early versions of explorer and netscape.

Well, man, the only thing I can advise you is to renew everything you have. First of all, Norton is the best antivirus in the planet, and to have it is to be completely protected against everything, so I would renew it if I was you, doesn't matter how much it costs.

If you have no money to buy it, then get something cheap or free, but good. I can recommend you AdWare, McCafee, Avast and Spyware doctor. If some of them does not include protection against something, spyware for example, you can mix them. For example, you can mix AdWare with Spyware Doctor and you get good protection for free.

About your hard drive space. In this times is better to have something good in technology affairs than something bad, or poor. Your hard drive might have a big space, but it's runnin' out. I would suggest you to get an external hard drive (there is a very big amount of USB hard drives offers in the web) if you don't want to change your computer. Despite, there is always the chance to buy a better computer.

I have have had the free version protesting me since 2002 and I have no complaints, I have coupled it with SpywareBlaster and the free ZoneAlarm firewall I feel safe (ish).
Give up using Windows, and install Linux on your computer. Linux is immune to all viruses, malware, spyware and adware.

About norton antivirus?

I used intelligent updater to update my virus definitions in Norton anti-virus 2005. Why is it that when i connect to the internet now and run live update it still shows some files remaining to be downloaded.Does anyone else face this problem?

I was a user of Norton Antivirus until my subscription ended. I usually update it through liveupdate, which, for me, sucks. So when I'm away, here's what I do:

1.) I download updates from different sources like download.com and then

2.) install it on my pc when i get home.

Yes, you can save/burn the avg installer onto a disc, then open the installer from the cd to the infected pc.. You have to install avg to the infected computer, you can't install it on a cd.

I reckon that viruses sometimes attack the giants like Norton and McAffee.

From my experience, F-Secure is by far the best I've seen, however, it also costs. I use AVG with spot checks via PCcillin's ''Housecall'' web based virus check.

Norton's website is great for finding removers as a last line of defense, but I wouldn't trust their software as the first line.

No it is just telling you that some system files have changed since your last scan. Quite normal. Do not try to delete - leave alone. Only delete or quarantine any viruses found.

Malware has been known to modify your Windows HOSTS file to redirect you to a different website or block access to a web-site totally.

But a Hosts file can also be used by legitimate anti-malware programs to block content from malicious sites. It must be there.Was it a trial version?(ye know for limited period).Or else get prepared to change yer hard disk,cause a few months back a problem akin to yours i.e; my entire OS disappeared.Repeated formating etc did not help.I was informed that ,the problem was relating to ''disk manager utility'' and finally I had to replace a new drive.

try using avg free on line scanner, it seems to pick up alot of what Norton misses. most scanners will give you option to either remove the virus, or quarantine it. depending on whether the file is a vital file, i would choose to delete it. If your just not sure, then quarantine it.

No antivirus on the market is capable of detecting 100% of viruses/malware. The only thing vendors can do is get as close as possible to this 100% detection rate, but because new viruses are being made and detected daily it is more of a battle of attrition. With that said the best antiviruses have around a 99% virus/malware detection rate and most of the others are somewhere in the 90% range, per the last av comparatives. Every antivirus on the market will offer some amount of protection, whether free or paid and there is no one perfect solution. You can get infected with every antivirus on the market regardless of the detection rate...just look at some of the questions here. If you choose to pay for an antivirus program I suggest Nod32 or BitDefender. These are GREAT programs with excellent detection rates. If you are looking for free my personal preference is Antivir, which has great virus detection rates, but as far as malware you will need an addition scanner to aid in its removal. i would recomend going to Circuit City and getting CA Internet Security Suite - although it costs about 50 dollars, it has everything you need. - but the firewall needs to be customized. Yes, but they're not free. You can get ZoneAlarm Security Suite, which is a firewall, antivirus and antispyware, all in one.

Anti-viruses are supposed to prevent viruses. Since they know how to prevent viruses, they must know how to create these viruses. So, unless they are honest, it is possible for them to make viruses. Whether they do or not, I don't know.

So I used to have Norton anitvirus corportate edition and I want to install the 2006 anti virus. it didn't let me because i had the corporate version installed. I uninstalled the corporate version (via ''add/remove in control panel) and it still wont let me install the new software sying corporate version is still installed. damn, these people are making it too hard at first. Just try and system restore back to an earlier date. Find this in your accessories in system tools. Maybe your antivirus expired and you need to buy or get a hold of a new subscription. Symantec sucks anyways. Try Windows Live OneCare. I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. PCTools products do get good reviews. The good thing is they have free versions of their products. They work great. Spyware Doctor from the Google pack is a must. I highly recommend it. I bought Webroots Spysweeper and spyware doctor finds stuff spysweeper does not. Having both is a perfect combo and I recommend running two anti-spyware products.

As long as you install a new anti-virus program straight after uninstalling 7.1, you should be fine.

Make sure you specifically UNINSTALL it not just DELETE the folder containing the program.

I'd also reccomend disconnecting from the internet while you do it to prevent any viruses getting on the PC while you're doing it.

No. Do not uninstall 7.1. Download 7.5 and then double click to start the install. When the option to ''Repair install'' is given choose that. This will install all of the new 7.5 files needed. This is what AVG recommends.

AT%26T is free if your paying for their internet service. They don't include a firewall, you have to find one on your own. The rest of AT%26T's antivirus, antispywear, etc. is working fine, for me. From experience, the prices dont vary in any store. The price for renewing is the same everywhere. But I suggest you buy the newer version. If you buy it on sale, you can get it for about the same price as renewing. That's what i've been doing. Norton internet security 2004, '05, '06, '07, and soon 2008. I think its the best way. Fry's electronics has really good deals on norton every once in a while.

This is related to an earlier question. After receiving `Threat alerts' from AVG, it gives the option of moving them to the AVG Virus Vault, but prompts me to confirm, as moving system32 files may make my OS unstable. These infected files are located in both my C and D (partition) drives of my Windows XP. Is it safe to delete them once they have been moved to the Virus Vault??? (NB. AVG Virus Vault is the quarantine area)

If the files cannot be disinfected, moving them into quarantine is really the only method to disinfect. Most likely this will not cause too much issue - but, if it does, it is possible to restore necessary system files using the Windows setup disk.

usually windows xp will stop you from doing anything that can cause the sytem to be come unstable.

there are literally dozens of freeware malware scanners available.

however one suite that does everything you could ever want is available from www.trendmicro.com for a thirty day trial and at the moment i belive there is a special offer on the software at reduced rates.

it is called pc-cillin internet security 2007 it is XP and vista capable, so upgrade to vista and you do not lose your licence.

one registration key for life which requires a simply click to update the subscription information for example i had over 9months remaining on my first years licence to update, just before christmas they had a special release offer price for upgrade to 2007 from internet security14, almost half price (two years for the price of one) so now my licence expires in september 2009 it cost me the equivelent of just 拢20 a year for the first threeeyears per computer (2 systems).
