Is XP Antivirus Notification for real? Or just trying to get me to pay to register?

Window's Security Center will bug you occasionally if you do not have an anti-virus installed. This is more of a ''friendly reminder'', and can be turned off (select ''Change the way Security Center alerts me).

Other messages that do not come from the Security Center are, ironically, spyware that has already made it onto your computer.

There is only one to find out, don't pay and see what happens.
