I would recommend staying away from Norton and Mcafee as they are typically system hogs. They will slow the system down.

I recommend using combination of Zonelabs Zonealarm firewall and BitDefender v10. Bitdefender is first version to be able to detect rootkits. The antivirus alone has both Antivirus and Spyware detection.
I've had mcafee for years internet suite for the past two years this years is really improved I highly recomend it I paid $70 for it and a rebate for $70 did that past two years also
I know one called Spybot.It is really goood so you should try it.
