For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir庐 PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than most "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. Uses less then 10 MB RAM on my machine. And did I mention that it's free for life!

BTW, Avoid the free version of an anti-virus called AVG, it has horrible virus detection capibilities. Mostly noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children use AVG Free. People of their ilk love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!

From my experience it has to be Bitdefender. My system has run great since installing it about 3 months ago. I have even tested it with some of the available test online and it has passed. I have even gone to some shady sites and all is still good.
